With the semester winding down, the Hood community can expect many more Colloquium events next semester.
The first event will feature Will Noel, the curator of Manuscripts and Rare Books at the Walters Art Museum on March 1 in Rosenstock Auditorium at 7 p.m.
The discussion will concern either the current Walters exhibition on the Archimedes Palimpsest or more generally discuss the technological evolution of the book such as the shift from the scroll to the codex.
The second event is titled “The Art and History of the Book,” which features a talk with April Oettinger and Paul Dowling. The date for this event is to be determined.
Speaker April Oettinger is an art historian at Goucher who teaches the history of the book and book illustration in the Western world. She is currently working on a book titled “Romance and the Revival of Antiquity in Italian Renaissance Art.”
Speaker Paul Dowling is the owner of Liber Antiquus, a rare books dealership specializing in early printed books and manuscripts from the 15th century to the Early Modern Period.
Later in the semester, the colloquium will host Juniper Ellis, Professor of English at Loyola University. Ellis will discuss her book “Tattooing the World: Pacific Designs in Print and Skin” that explores the history of the tattoo.
On April 16, award winning author Rebecca Skloot will give the Haines Lecture in Biomedical Ethics. The event is co-sponsored with Frederick Reads and will be held at the Weinberg Center.
The Humanities Council runs the Colloquium series, works to find presenters that fit the curriculum of Hood as a whole.
