Hood College students expressed disappointment in the presidential debate that took place at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio Tuesday night.
Students tuned in to the debate by hosting COVID-friendly watch parties.
President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden took the stage to debate about the Supreme Court, COVID 19, economy, race and violence and their records and the integrity of voting.
Students from different political views had very similar things to say about the debate.
“I did not know what to expect when I watched the debate, but I think overall it was a poor debate,” said Tyler Simms, a Trump supporter. “All they did was attack each other, never actually answer the question and interrupt the moderator.”
On the topic of race, President Trump was asked by moderator Chris Wallace and Biden to condemn white supremacists and he failed to address the statement.
Students were disappointed that the debate went in circles rather than focusing on the topic at hand.
“I’m disappointed but not surprised by the disrespect shown by our president,” said Lydia Schoonover, a Biden supporter. “He didn’t condemn white supremacist groups on national television and I’m not surprised because of the hateful nature of Trump.”
Some students didn’t bother to tune in to the debate.
“I didn’t feel the need to watch the debate because it always just seems like a ‘my horse is bigger than your horse’ and everyone just goes into it automatically hating the other side not ever hearing them out,” said Tenley Reeder, a senior at Hood. “That’s why America is so divided. I just didn’t want to watch a yelling match and waste my time.”
