New COVID-19 case halts athletic practices

Athletic practices and training have been suspended until Monay after another student athlete has tested positive for COVID-19.

During this time, the athletic facilities will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized in order to ensure continued health within the department.

“After doing contract tracing on that student, we realized that five teams had players that were in contact with the athlete that tested positive,” athletic director Susan Kolb said in an email sent to student athletes on Oct. 27.

Although only this one additional case has been reported so far, the decision was made out of an abundance of caution because of these exposure concerns.

President Andrea Chapdelaine also sent an email to students about the matter, explaining that this was the third student to test positive in the past two weeks.

Despite this, Chapdelaine stated that the incidents were contained, and contact tracing and quarantine measures were put into effect.

The affected student athlete has returned home to quarantine.

“I’m feeling okay, I just can’t taste or smell much right now,” said the student, who asked not to be named.

Kolb was not available to comment.

If no more cases emerge, the athletic department hopes to resume athletic activities by Monday.
