Hood College men’s lacrosse team will have a shortened spring season.
The Blazers will play 11 games, including eight conference matches. The season will conclude with four rounds of conference playoffs. The team will follow all the of the Hood College and Mid-Atlantic Conference COVID-19 guidelines.
The spring 2020 season got cut short after just six games. Before canceling the remainder of the season, Hood had collected a record of 4-2 in non-conference games.
Upon the announcement of the season hiatus last spring, many players said they were shocked and heartbroken. Although this season’s schedule is not as long as normal, the team is grateful to be able to play.
“It’s super exciting to be able to play my senior year,” senior attackman Gavin Combe said. “Nobody wants to sit out their final year.”
Combe is a captain this season, along with fellow seniors Bailey Meehan and Michael Cook and junior Kyle Scott.
The Hood men’s lacrosse team has never finished above 6th place in the conference. This year, the team has their sights set on the top five.
“We’ve been doing a lot of work in the weight room and on the field,” Combe said. “This would be a big statement year for us.”
The Blazers are set to play some big games this season. The most challenging being against York College of Pennsylvania. York is new to the MAC and was ranked second in the nation in 2019. Stevenson will also be a tough conference game for the Blazers. The two teams have been battling against each other for years.
This isn’t just a big year for the seniors, but for the whole team, including the first-year players.
Combe said that he is excited to watch some first-year standouts, Colby Gallagher and Logan Rhoads, play this season.
Combe described Gallagher as a shifty attackman with good hands and great vision and Rhoads as a tenacious and aggressive defender.
The Blazers’ first game is at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, at Arcadia University. Their first home game is the following weekend at 1 p.m. on March 13 at the Thomas Athletic Field
