Hood student entrepreneurs

Hood College is home to many talented and intelligent students who are innovative and aren’t afraid of adding something extra to their plate.

Two of those students are junior Elizabeth Jenkins and sophomore Joseph Alston.

Jenkins is an art and archaeology major with a concentration in art education. When she is not busy with schoolwork, she spends her time managing her business, Twisted Talismans. Her business offers a collection of handcrafted, one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces.

“I like to say that Twisted Talismans is the weirdly amazing combination of everything I like, nature, the occult, and art,” Jenkins said. “I’ve always been drawn to jewelry as an art form and being able to combine it with my other creative interests just made sense.”

Jenkins has made 124 sales on Etsy and has sold over 200 items at local farmer’s markets since officially opening Twisted Talismans in the early spring of 2019.

“I get so much joy when I know that someone else resonates with my art and that’s enough to keep me motivated,” she said.

In September 2021, Jenkins will be a vendor at Frederick Pagan Pride, where she will be able to sell her jewelry and interact face-to-face with customers.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to learn from the experience and share Twisted Talismans with the world,” Jenkins said.

Joseph Alston, a sophomore integrated marketing communications major and player on the men’s lacrosse team, has also found time within his academic career to open up a clothing business called Blȅȁchȅd Outfittȅrs.

Alston and his high school friend, Dylan Keenan of Alfred University, created the clothing brand in August 2017 and have since made over 100 sales.

Although managing a business, being a student and participating in collegiate level sports can be overwhelming for Alston, he stressed that the excitement he feels when putting out new products keeps him and his business partner motivated to continue.

“There’s nothing better than receiving good feedback for a new product after releasing a promotional video or picture on social media,” Alston said.

New items have recently shown up on their website. Hats, hoodies and long sleeves, as well as their best-selling Eye of Horus hoodie, are all available and have expected delivery times of 5-8 business days.
