Rocky’s New York Pizza and Italian restaurant is popular among college students in Frederick, as it is located between Frederick Community College and Hood College. Since it has been around for almost 20 years now, Rocky’s has been able to build a strong crowd with its unbeatable prices and attentative staff members.

However, the restaurant could use some updates. As you walk in, it seems as if you’re walking into 2005 with the restaurant’s bright coral walls and floral wallpaper, really old menu signs and dated chairs and tables. If you’re looking for a fancy Italian restaurant, this one may not meet your expectations. But what Rocky’s lacks in atmosphere, it makes up for in quality of service and food.

At Rocky’s you have many options on how to order your food. You can go up to the counter and order, sit down and order, or you can call ahead and sit down once you get there. They are very flexible and efficient when it comes to how you get your food.

The staff is very friendly and always make sure you have what you want. Their main cook is Carlos who has been working at Rocky’s for over five years. He will most likely always be the one to greet you, take your order and cook your food.

The menu features a wide variety of Italian staples like chicken parmesan, cold cuts and my personal favorite, pizza.

Rocky’s pizza is New York-style served by the slice or whole. The crust is thin and crispy and the slices are big. I consider myself to be a pizza connoisseur and having tasted New York pizza, and Rocky’s is very similar and the only one of its kind I’ve seen in Frederick.

Aside from the pizza, I have also had mozzarella sticks, which are made fresh, and the french fries. The mozzarella sticks are pretty delicious, but the fries aren’t anything special.

Rocky’s also competes with its prices. When I go to get food there, the most I will spend is $15 for two slices of pepperoni pizza, an order of mozzarella sticks, a drink and a $5 tip.

It is actually quite surprising that the prices are still low considering the effect COVID has had on small restaurants, but Rocky’s has been able to keep its prices reasonable while still serving good food.

Overall, I give Rocky’s a 9/10, because I haven’t tried its whole menu, but I would highly recommend it for the pizza.
