Ask BeeGee: How to Survive Course Selection

By Maddie Garvis//

It’s that time of year again. Frustration, stress, tough decisions and staying up until midnight to click exactly two buttons on self-service. That’s right, it’s course selection time!

The best way to go about picking courses is to focus on the classes Hood requires students to take first. It’s easy to be led off the path by a shiny new class that sounds like so much more fun than your science requirement, but it’s better to get those out of the way first.

Trust me. You don’t want to be trudging through your three-hour lab science requirement senior year while all your friends are in yoga and ceramics.

If you’ve already declared a major, course selection is a little easier, as you have an actual list of classes in your degree progress that you need to take to graduate. Convenient.

Don’t overpack your schedule just because you think you’re a bad bitch when it comes to academics and that you can handle it. You might very well be able to handle it, but your mental health and sanity will suffer if you take on too much. Even if you are a bad bitch.

That being said, don’t settle for taking 12 credits per semester just because that’s enough to be full-time. You’ll end up behind and taking 18 credits per semester your senior year when you should be spending your time having an existential crisis about how to be a real, functioning adult after you graduate.

Disassociating from your problems takes up a lot of time after all.

Although you should always be aware of what required classes you still need, don’t forget to take a fun class once in a while just for the heck of it.

Podcasting? Absolutely. Badminton? Surprisingly awesome. Queer Histories in the United States? Sign me up.

Don’t worry too much (said the overly-anxious newspaper staff writer), and good luck!
