Two members of the Hood cross country teams set records in their last event of the season at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship on Nov. 12.
The Blazers placed 26 at the event, which tied the team’s placement from the 2021 season.
Aylene Hernandez and Chris Sappe both ran the fastest time in program history by a first-year in their respective events.
While at regionals, Sappe paced the Blazers men’s team with a time of 27:05.6 in the 8-kilometer event where he placed 60. This is the best finish in an 8K event by a Blazer since 2012 where Hood’s Brett Shelley placed 110. This is also the seventh fastest time overall in Hood history.
In the MAC Conference Championships Sappe ran a time of 26:25.6 which was just three seconds slower than the Hood record, which was set in 2010 by Dan Jacobs.
“It was annoying, because I was right there but I am definitely looking for the overall record next year,” Sappe said.
Hernandez set several fastest time records over the course of this season, but in her final race of the year she also set the record for best finish by a Blazer in a regional event. Hernandez placed 59th in the 5-kilometer event with a time of 23:51.1.
The previous best finish by a first-year was set in 2015 by Jayla Harris.
“Going forward, obviously we learned a lot this season I think applying this to next season will hopefully help us break more records,” Hernandez said.
