Hood College will present a free performance of the one-woman show “Good Actors” on Feb. 10 and Feb. 11 in the Tatem Arts Center.
“The show is feminist, funny, and sexy,” said Aaron Angello, a professor of English and theater at Hood. “In it, Sommer talks explicitly about sex and sexuality, but that’s just a part of it. The show’s about an hour long, and it’s smart and a lot of fun.”
“Good Actors” is based on the poetry collection of the same name by the award-winning poet, writer, curator, and artist Sommer Browning. Both written and performed by Browning, the show is an exploration of the beauty and impossibility of being human.
Angello directed the play and believes it will be an engaging performance that defies genres.
“I think people should come see ‘Good Actors’ because it’s a fascinating meeting of poetry and theater,” Angello said. “Sommer Browning, the author and performer, is an award-winning poet with several books published to great acclaim. She and I thought we would try to recreate the experience of reading the book live, on stage.”
The show also ponders philosophical topics such as the transition between art and life and the disparity between roles, performances and real life.
According to Angello, Browning is especially engaging because of her background in standup. She has performed all over the country in standup comedy groups and in theaters with GASP, a poetry theater group.
“She’s brilliant and talented, but also very down to earth. She’s a good friend of mine, and an absolute joy to work with,” Angello said.
The show made its debut at the Tucson Fringe Festival Jan. 19-21 and is traveling across the country.
