A combined ceremony was held April 2 to induct 75 new members into the honor societies of Alpha Lambda Delta, Ionic Society and Mortar Board.
Acceptance into all three organizations is based on academic achievement, leadership and service.
The Ionic Society is unique to Hood and members are selected during their sophomore year. Alpha Lambda Delta and Mortar Board are national honors societies. Students are selected for Alpha Lambda Delta during their first year and students in Mortar Board are selected when they are juniors.
During the event, presidents of each honor society spoke as they inducted new members.
Maria Bernal inducted new members into Mortar Board, Faith Kiser inducted members into Ionic Society and Phebe Frost inducted members into Alpha Lambda Delta. After their name was called, new inductees walked across the Hodson Auditorium stage, received a certificate, and shook hands with Hood President Andrea Chapdelaine.
Thirty-one students were inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta, 21 into the Ionic Society and 23 into Mortar Board.
At the ceremony, the Ionic Society also presented two Honorary Ion awards and one Ronald J. Volpe Award of the Iris. Amani Al-Dajane, director of International Student Services and Cathy Jones, who works in the dining hall, were awarded Honorary Ion awards because of the care and positivity they show students. The Award of the Iris was presented to senior Hannah Armstrong because of her leadership and dedication.
Each of the societies participates in community service projects such as the blood drive, which is hosted each semester by the Ionic Society and Safe Harvest, which is hosted by Mortar Board.
