How to Relieve Stress:

1. Meditate

When most people hear the word meditate, they usually think about twisting and turning their body into all sorts of positions. This is not the case. Meditation for each person is different. For some people, yes, twisting their body into different positions is relaxing for them. However, for everyone else, meditation can be any repetitive action.

Psychiatrist Dr. Angela Brantley said, “I have had patients that walk, run, craft, knit, or even listen to music as a form of meditation. Meditation varies from person to person, but that is why it’s such a good technique to relieve stress.”

2. Breathing Exercises

Deep breathing is associated with a feeling of calmness. When you get stressed, your breathing starts to become short and it’s not always easy to find your breath. When you start to notice your breathing changing, sit down and do deep breathing exercises. By performing deep breathing exercises, you are gaining control over your body.

Therapist Sara Girovasi said, “ During sessions I have had clients get so stressed that I could see their breathing change. I immediately have them stop talking and just breathe. The time length that I have patients do breathing exercises varies, it all depends on how quickly they calm down. I have seen this technique work miracles, but I have also realized that most people do not know when to use this technique on their own.”
