Can you spell acouchi?  Camouflage?  How about chinchilla?  If you think you have what it takes to compete against the best and the brightest spellers on campus, then try your luck at Hood College’s Spring 2012 Spelling Bee sponsored by Hood College Student Musical Theater.

The event will be held Wednesday April 11 at 9 p.m. in the Whitaker Student Commons, with registration beginning at 8:30 p.m.

“This spelling bee will be featured as part of the Whitaker Wednesday series, so we’re also very fortunate to be receiving help and support from Angie Bauman, Don Miller, CAB, and the Student Life team,” Ashley Birdsell, president of Hood College Musical Theater, said.

The cost to join the competition is $5, free for spectators, and all proceeds will benefit Hood College Musical Theater and will help the student organization in purchasing costumes and set designs for next year’s show.

“We thought it would be a fun, interesting fundraiser that ties in with our musical theater performance,” Birdsell said.

The Spring 2012 Spelling Bee will be emceed by SGA President Doug Raftery as contestants will be asked to spell several words which have been pulled from Scripps, the national spelling bee competition.  Words will increase in difficulty as the contest progresses along with some Hood College words thrown in there as well, Birdsell said.

“The winner will receive extra Blazer Bucks, always a good thing! People who attend will be able to see a sneak peek of the upcoming musical,” Birdsell said.

Along with the contest, Hood College Musical Theater will be holding a raffle for the “best seats in the house” at one of their musical performances.
