Lucy Sokoloff had never picked up a lacrosse stick before high school. Now she’s a starter and a captain for the Hood College women’s lacrosse team.

Sokoloff never planned to play lacrosse in college, in fact, she was heavily recruited to go into diving at the Division I level, but being a self-proclaimed homebody kept her in the Frederick area.

Sokoloff said that in high school she didn’t really know what she wanted to do during her college years. She originally decided to go to Hood for only one year so she could figure out what she really wanted to do with her future. After getting a push from her mother to play a sport, Sokoloff joined the lacrosse team.

She started playing lacrosse in high school just to stay active during the spring. She made the varsity team at Governor Thomas Johnson High School as a sophomore and was then named a captain her junior year.

Although her lacrosse experience is small, her competitiveness and passion for the game is big.

“Everyone on my high school team thought I was really aggressive, but I thought of myself not as aggressive but passionate,” Sokoloff said.

After her freshman year at Hood, Sokoloff said she decided to stay because of the environment on campus and because of all the friends she made. She also said that staying close to home was beneficial for her mental health.

“Now I really don’t want to leave,” Sokoloff said.

Sokoloff is double majoring in psychology and English. After college she plans on getting her master’s degree in counseling. Next year Sokoloff has an internship lined up at the Phoenix Recovery Academy, a high school in Frederick designed to help teenagers recover from substance abuse.

The women’s lacrosse team only won two of their first five games, but Sokoloff said she is prepared and hopeful for a mid-season turn around.
