Lazy Fish has been part of the Downtown Frederick restaurant repertoire since 2014, serving customers an Asian fusion menu of inventive sushi rolls and specialty entrees. Lazy Fish is located on East Patrick Street, on the second floor directly above Sumittra Thai Cuisine.

To get to the restaurant, you have to walk down the alley and then up a flight of stairs, where you’re greeted by relaxing soft light and modern décor in a small, but cozy, space. This unconventional entrance to the restaurant gives it a little bit of an air of mystery and uniqueness, which I enjoyed.

The tables are more spaced out than usual due to the pandemic, so there’s a feeling of privacy at your table despite the smaller interior of the restaurant. There are a few booths inside that are on a raised platform a few inches above the floor and line up exactly with the windows, giving those seated in the booths a lovely view of downtown from the second floor.

The wait for two people was slightly longer than expected on a weeknight, at about 30-35 minutes, but it was a warm enough night, so my friend and I enjoyed a brief stroll around downtown Frederick during our wait.

For an appetizer we ordered the chicken dumplings, which were the perfect size to share, and were so amazing that I wish we had gotten two orders, especially considering they were only $7 for five dumplings.

I ordered both the Baltimore Roll and the Crunchy Shrimp Roll, which were both excellent, and reasonably priced at $8 and $6.50, respectively. My favorite of the two was the Baltimore Roll, which had lump crab, cucumber, avocado, Old Bay, and spicy mayo. The spice was flavorful without being overwhelming, which was exactly what I wanted as someone who doesn’t love super spicy food.

The service was good, but a little slow, which was to be expected as there were only two servers for the whole restaurant. Our sushi did get to our table a lot faster than I thought it would, as there were only two sushi chefs, making both the carry-out and dine-in orders.

Overall, I had a great experience during my first visit to Lazy Fish. They have a vast menu with a lot of options to choose from, with a wide range of prices, so anyone can afford a meal there even if they are working with a college student’s budget, as I am.

I would highly recommend Lazy Fish to anyone looking for a restaurant with a warm and memorable atmosphere and high-quality sushi at a reasonable price. I’m looking forward to going back to try some of the other items on their menu.
