The Latinx-based club on campus, La Comunidad, has resumed club events after a year of no in-person meetings.
La Comunidad hosted its first event during the start of Hispanic Heritage month to get the campus more involved in the club and the Hispanic culture.
“Our first event was a hit,” said Jennifer Rivera, the public relations representative of the club. “We had lotería night and we had over 40 people RSVP and show up to play.”
The main goal of the club is to celebrate diversity and encourage students of all races and ethnicities to want to learn more about the Latinx culture.
“You do not have to be Hispanic or Latinx to join La Comunidad,” Rivera said. “We welcome everyone to join.”
The club meets every Tuesday evening to discuss a variety of different topics that revolve around Hispanic culture and current events.
“Students come to learn more about the Latinx culture and different countries which is our goal and it’s a welcome space for everyone,” said Ashley Arevalo, a club member.
In order to get more student involvement, La Comunidad plans to host a number of events on campus throughout Hispanic Heritage month and the rest of the year.
It will be hosting events like the Fiesta which will take place on Sept. 30 from 4-6 p.m. in the Whitaker Campus Center.
La Comunidad will also host a celebration for the end of Hispanic Heritage month on Oct. 15 in the Whitaker Commons.
“We are very excited to host many more events and get the Hood Community involved,” Rivera said.
