The Frederick Arts Council’s Sky Stage is reopening for its 2024 season this month.
Each year, Sky Stage opens for a six-month period, spring to fall, usually April to October.
This year, Sky Stage’s public events will begin on Friday, April 26, opening with a teen production of “Almost Maine” by John Cariani. The venue will be available to book for private events as early as April 19.
Sky Stage hosts a variety of events that cater to a wide range of artistic tastes and interests.
In the Sky Stage concert series, live music performances that showcase local talent across various genres such as folk, jazz, indie and classical are played each week. The intimate setting of the open-air amphitheater creates an immersive experience for both performers and audience members, fostering a sense of connection and appreciation for live music.
In addition to music, Sky Stage also regularly hosts theatrical productions, poetry readings and art exhibitions. The venue serves as a platform for local artists to showcase their work, while also attracting renowned performers.
During the summer months, Sky Stage also hosts weekly dance events for a variety of genres, from salsa to swing dance. There are also weekly yoga events.
Originally a 19th-century livery stable, Sky Stage has undergone a remarkable transformation from a dilapidated structure to a thriving cultural center. It was acquired by the Frederick Arts Council in 2015.
The innovative renovation involved removing the roof to create an open-air amphitheater while preserving the original brick walls, earning Sky Stage recognition as a model of sustainable architecture. Since reopening in 2016, Sky Stage has become a dynamic hub for artistic expression.
