The Mortar Board Keystone Chapter hosted its annual Safe Harvest at Hood College on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

Safe Harvest is a fundraiser for Mortar Board that brings clubs, societies, organizations and the community together with fun activities and food.

According to Maria Bernal, the president of Mortar Board Keystone Chapter, Safe Harvest has become a staple of Frederick, typically drawing a crowd of a couple hundred people.

Safe Harvest is a family event that is open for kids of all ages. Most kids came dressed in Halloween costumes like Buzz Lightyear or Batman.

“…it’s also a way to bring chapters of other clubs and societies together to do a big community event,” Bernal said.

This year 18 clubs and organizations participated in Safe Harvest, handing out candy, taking pictures, painting faces, playing games and more.

Circle K set up cornhole for children to play for a chance to win candy and crafts.

SGA had a miniature bowling game and a pumpkin that kids could sign their name on.

Free Radicals, the Chemistry Honor Society at Hood put on a spooky science demonstration.

There were also mummy and ghost tours around campus, as well as trick-or-treating. Blaze made an appearance also and took pictures with all the kids.

Other clubs and organizations that had tables set up included CAB, The Iconic Society and InterVarsity.

“We like serving the community and this is just one way we can be active in the school and in the Frederick community,” said InterVarsity president, Isabella DiPietrantonio.

Mortar Board is an honor society for college seniors that focusses on leadership skills and community service.

Mortar Board was established as a women-based organization in 1918 and has been at Hood since 1948. Bernal became the president in May of 2021.

The honor society also puts on other fundraisers and events such as a women’s business fair and the Frederick County Library spelling bee, however, none can compare to Safe Harvest.
